This is because it is not always possible to score off each ball, and so they play the ball on its merits. You always try to score off the bad deliveries if you can, but when you get a good ball, it is a matter of survival with a good defense technique.

Keep Your Eye On the Ball

This sounds straight forward doesn't it, often you'll find that those that do that more consistently will more than likely be playing finer cricket strokes and place the ball more correctly. This means looking at the ball from the moment it leaves the bowlers hand, to where it strikes your cricket bat. Most of the time, players don't look at the ball when it comes close to the bat, and this can lead to incorrect strokes.

Those are just two example of effective batting techniques, and when your come close to flawlessness with these qualities alone, it will better your batting substantially.
